Veterans Telephone Town Hall Set for November 10

Flier for teletown hall event focused on veterans on Tuesday, November 10, 6pm.

On Tuesday, November 10, at 6 p.m., I will host a special Veterans Telephone Town Hall featuring American Legion Department Service Officer Bill McGovern.

Bill regularly assists veterans and their families through my Shamokin Dam district office, helping them navigate disability compensation, pensions, health care benefits and other available services.

During the Telephone Town Hall, we’ll discuss veterans’ benefits, available resources and issues affecting those who have served. Participants will also have the opportunity to ask questions directly from their phones.

With Veterans Day approaching, this is an opportunity to share information and connect veterans and their families with services that may be helpful to them.

Veterans, family members and residents interested in learning more are encouraged to participate.

Students and families preparing for college or other postsecondary education opportunities can learn more about financial aid during a free virtual presentation hosted by the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA).

The presentation will take place on Wednesday, November 11, at 10 a.m. through Microsoft Teams.

PHEAA Higher Education Access Partner Tiffanie DeVan will discuss the types of financial assistance available to students, including grants, scholarships and student loans. Participants will also learn about the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which is used to determine eligibility for many federal, state and institutional financial aid programs.

The session is open to families throughout Tiffanie’s eight-county service area, including Northumberland and Snyder counties.

Understanding the financial aid process can help students and families make informed decisions about their education and plan for the costs involved.

Register for the November 11 Financial Aid Presentation through Microsoft Teams.

Documentary and Panel Discussion to Address Homelessness November 19

Flier for Homeless in the Valley event on November 19th, 2026, 6-8pm at the Pine Barn Inn.

On Thursday, November 19, I will partner with Central Susquehanna Opportunities, Inc. (CSO) for a special screening of Homeless in the Valley, a short documentary highlighting the experiences of individuals facing homelessness in our region.

The event will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Pine Barn Inn, 43 Pine Barn Place, Danville.

Produced by Stone State Entertainment, the documentary shares personal stories of local individuals who have experienced homelessness. Following the screening, a community panel discussion will explore housing challenges, available resources and opportunities for local organizations to work together.

Understanding the challenges facing our neighbors begins with hearing their experiences. I hope this event will encourage a thoughtful conversation about homelessness and ways we can better support individuals and families in our communities.

The event is made possible with support from the Charles and Betty Degenstein Foundation and the Charles B. Degenstein Foundation.

Registration is requested by November 12.

Mooresburg Presbyterian Church in Danville held a special Veterans Appreciation program on Sunday, November 1, recognizing the men and women who have served our country.

The morning program featured a performance by KJ Reimensnyder-Wagner and provided an opportunity for the congregation and community to thank veterans for their service and sacrifice.

As Veterans Day approaches, gatherings like this remind us of the importance of recognizing those who have served, listening to their experiences and showing appreciation for their contributions to our communities.

I appreciate Mooresburg Presbyterian Church, the event organizers and everyone who helped recognize our local veterans.

Penn’s Tavern Celebrates 10 Years in Business

Congratulations to Penn’s Tavern in Sunbury on celebrating its 10th anniversary!

Together with Rep. JoAnne Stehr, I recognized this milestone with a Pennsylvania Senate citation honoring owners Tom and Liz Mertz and their team for their contributions to the local community.

Located along the Susquehanna River just south of Sunbury, Penn’s Tavern has a history stretching back more than 200 years. The property has served as a tavern, hotel, ferry house, post office and railroad stop before becoming the restaurant visitors know today.

Under the Mertzes’ leadership, the restaurant has continued this history while offering locally sourced food and craft beer, live entertainment and a gathering place for residents and visitors.

Small businesses like Penn’s Tavern contribute to the character and economy of our communities. Congratulations to Tom, Liz and their entire team on this anniversary, and best wishes for continued success!

I joined representatives from the Northeastern Pennsylvania Industrial Resource Center (NEPIRC) and other state and local officials for a tour of Cheetah Chassis in Berwick to learn more about the manufacturing industry and resources available to support local businesses.

NEPIRC is a public-private partnership that provides training, technical assistance and consulting services to small and midsize manufacturers across an 11-county region of Pennsylvania.

During the visit, we discussed NEPIRC’s efforts to help manufacturers improve operations, strengthen their workforce and address challenges facing the industry.

Manufacturing plays an important role in our regional economy, providing employment opportunities and supporting businesses throughout our communities.

I appreciate NEPIRC for organizing the tour and Cheetah Chassis for the opportunity to learn more about its operations and the needs of our local manufacturing sector.

Learning About Physical Education at Bloomsburg Area Middle School

I had the opportunity to visit a physical education class at Bloomsburg Area Middle School at the invitation of teacher Ambreelinne Birth, who also serves as president-elect of SHAPE PA.

During my visit, students participated in activities focused on rhythm, agility and the importance of making choices during physical activity.

It was a great opportunity to see how physical education teachers engage students through activities that encourage movement, coordination and decision-making.

Ambreelinne’s work also extends beyond the classroom through SHAPE PA, a volunteer-run organization that supports health and physical education teachers across Pennsylvania through professional development, leadership and advocacy.

Thank you to Ambreelinne and the Bloomsburg Area School District for welcoming me into the classroom and sharing the work being done to support student health and physical education.
