HARRISBURG – Sen. Lynda Schlegel Culver (R-27) and Rep. Michael Stender (R-108) today announced more than $150,000 in state grants has been awarded for two projects in Northumberland County.
“These grants are reinvesting Marcellus Shale impact fee revenue in our local communities,” Culver said. “The projects will have positive benefits in their communities and on the residents who live in them. State funding for these projects helps to reduce the burden placed on local taxpayers while investing in the strength and vitality of our area.”
The Municipal Authority of the City of Sunbury was awarded more than $94,000 to replace the sill on a flood closure. The grant is being awarded through the Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) Flood Mitigation Program. The program provides grants of up to $500,000 and requires the grant applicant to fund 15% of the total project cost.
Watsontown Borough will receive more than $56,000 to improve Watsontown Skate Park. The grant is being provided through DCED’s Greenways, Trails, and Recreation Program. The program provides grants of up to $250,000 and requires the applicant to fund 15% of the total project cost.
“I’m pleased to see these grant dollars come back to our community. Each grant serves as an opportunity to restore the resources necessary for our future,” said Stender. “Not only will families continue to enjoy outdoor recreation, but they will also have the ability to maintain a safe living environment and protect their property without the worry of a tax increase.”
Funding for both programs is provided through the 2012 law establishing an impact fee on Marcellus Shale natural gas wells.
Both grants were awarded by the Commonwealth Financing Authority (CFA). The CFA was created in 2004 as an independent agency of the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development to administer the commonwealth’s economic stimulus packages.
