HARRISBURG – Sen. Lynda Schlegel Culver (R-27) and Rep. Mike Cabell (R-117) today announced a state grant for $777,449 has been awarded to upgrade and expand the water treatment plant in Sugarloaf Township.
“This grant will help defray the costs of this large project, which will protect local taxpayers while ensuring the community benefits from the enhanced water treatment plant,” Culver said. “This is an example of the federal government and state government working together to help a local government provide an essential service.”
The grant was awarded to the Conyngham Sugarloaf Joint Municipal Authority by the Commonwealth Financing Authority (CFA). The CFA was created in 2004 as an independent agency of the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development to administer the commonwealth’s economic stimulus packages.
The grant is being funded with money from the federal COVID-19 American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) that is disbursed through the H20 PA Program.
“This H2O PA funding is a unique opportunity to take on larger projects, like what’s needed to resolve the longstanding wastewater treatment issues facing the Conyngham Sugarloaf Joint Municipal Authority,” said Rep. Mike Cabell (R-Luzerne).
Established by the General Assembly in 2008, the H2O PA Program provides for single-year and multi-year grants for the construction of drinking water, sanitary sewer and storm sewer projects; the construction or renovation of flood control projects; and the repair or rehabilitation of high-hazard unsafe dams.
