HARRISBURG – Sen. Lynda Schlegel Culver (R-27), Rep. Mike Cabell (R-117) and Rep. Alec Ryncavage (R-119) today announced more than $1.5 million in state grants have been awarded for projects to benefit residents in Luzerne County.
The grants were awarded through the Commonwealth Financing Authority’s (CFA) Local Share Account (LSA) Program, which funds projects concerning the public interest, community improvement and economic development using gaming money generated by casinos.
“These state grants help move these projects forward without financially burdening local governments or the taxpayers who fund them,” Culver said. “The state serves as a financial partner with the county and municipal governments to advance projects that improve the quality of life for local residents.”
“I’ve worked closely with the Slocum Township supervisors for the last two years, and I know how important this playground project is to them and to the children of this area,” Cabell said. “I was very pleased that Sen. Culver and I could help secure some funding for these improvements.”
“I am extremely proud of the work Sen. Culver and I are doing to prioritize infrastructure and services for our constituents on the mountain,” Ryncavage said. “As inflation continues to drive up costs making these projects unaffordable for our municipalities – even for the projects that were already in the works – we are committed to collaborating with our local officials to ensure we get these projects over the finish line for our residents.”
Grant recipients include:
- Conyngham Township received $175,000 to replace the bridge over Turtle Creek that serves as the primary access point to St. Mary’s Cemetery and provides access from Lee Road to properties owned by Conyngham Township, Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and Pennsylvania American Water Company.
- Fairview Township received $242,000 to replace Dale Drive Bridge.
- Fairview Township received $300,000 to build an addition to its municipal and police building.
- Luzerne County received $750,000 for roadway improvements on Oak Hill Road in Wright Township.
- Slocum Township received $100,000 for improvements to Memorial Park, including upgrades to the tennis court, basketball court and walking trail, and purchase and installation of playground equipment.
The CFA is an independent agency of the Department of Community and Economic Development that administers many of Pennsylvania’s economic development and community improvement programs.
