Celebrating the Commonwealth University–Bloomsburg Class of 2025

On May 17, I had the privilege of returning to my alma mater, Bloomsburg University, to deliver the commencement address to the Class of 2025. As a proud Husky and a lifelong resident of this region, it was truly an honor to stand before this group of bright, resilient graduates and reflect on their journey.

This class overcame enormous challenges—from graduating high school during a pandemic to adapting to the transition brought by the university’s recent merger into Commonwealth University. Their strength, flexibility, and perseverance are a testament to the future leaders they are becoming.

I encouraged this year’s graduates to define success in their own terms and to lean on the resilience they’ve already shown. No matter where life takes them—whether it’s teaching in their hometown, building a business, or taking part in public service—they are equipped with the grit, heart, and foundation to thrive.

To the Class of 2025: you inspire me, and I can’t wait to see what you accomplish next.

Senate Votes to Improve Communication About School Safety Issues

To empower parents and increase transparency, the Senate passed legislation to improve reporting requirements about potentially dangerous situations at schools.

Senate Bill 246 would require parental and employee notification when there is a weapon on any school property that violates its weapons policy, as well as when there are cases of harassment and bullying. It would apply to public, non-public and private schools. Current law does not require school districts to inform parents about incidents when a weapon is brought onto school grounds or to related activities.

The bill is part of a larger initiative to empower families and foster safe communities. It moves to the House of Representatives for consideration.

Working Together to Support Pennsylvania’s Volunteer Fire Service

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Firefighter Recruitment event on May 20 at Route 61 Events in Sunbury. It was a productive and energizing evening focused on how we can support and grow Pennsylvania’s volunteer fire service.

I was proud to be joined by Representative Michael Stender and local volunteer firefighter Eric Frantz for a discussion on practical strategies to recruit and retain the next generation of first responders. We also highlighted success stories, like the Danville Area High School firefighting club, that give students hands-on exposure to emergency service careers.

With volunteer numbers declining statewide, events like this are an important opportunity to connect lawmakers, first responders, educators, and community members in pursuit of meaningful solutions.

My thanks to everyone who attended, shared ideas, or helped spread the word. I look forward to continuing this important conversation.

Grants Available for Firefighting Equipment and Training

The Office of the State Fire Commissioner has two grant programs that are accepting applications through May 29. Both programs distribute grants ranging from $25,000 to $100,000. Applications should be submitted online.

The Emergency Training Center Capital Grant Program awards funds that can be used to establish or modernize facilities, acquire or renovate structures and repair or purchase equipment. Emergency service training centers, community colleges, county-owned facilities, municipal or fire department-owned facilities and nonprofit, countywide associations are eligible.

The Municipal Fire Department Capital Grant Program awards money to municipal fire departments to improve structures and firefighting equipment in the commonwealth.

Over $1.38 Million Awarded for Luzerne County Community Projects

This week, I was pleased to join in announcing over $1.38 million in grant awards to support infrastructure and public service improvements to Luzerne County municipalities within the 27th Senatorial District. The funding, approved by the Commonwealth Financing Authority, is part of the Local Share Account (LSA) – Luzerne County program, which reinvests gaming revenue into communities across the region.

Projects receiving funding in Luzerne County include:

  • Road paving, fire station design, and public works equipment
  • Park improvements, ADA-accessible recreation upgrades, and emergency service facility planning
  • Streambank restoration and wastewater facility renovations

These investments will make a real impact on residents’ daily lives, whether through safer roads, better-equipped emergency responders, or improved local parks.

I’m proud to support efforts that bring resources back to our district and help our local communities grow stronger.

PA Offers Free Motorcycle Training

May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, a great time to sign up for a motorcycle safety course whether you’re a novice or experienced rider. Classes are free for Pennsylvanians who have a motorcycle learner’s permit or motorcycle license.

Successful completion of a basic or intermediate course offered by the state waives the requirement to take a skills test at a PennDOT driver license center and automatically earns the permit holder their motorcycle license.

Class schedules are coordinated by third-party training providers at locations across the commonwealth and posted online at least four weeks before the class begins. Learn more about Pennsylvania’s Motorcycle Safety Program.

Montour Night Out – Connecting Community & First Responders

On Wednesday, June 11th from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, residents are invited to attend Montour Night Out at Danville Middle School – a free, family-friendly event bringing the community together with local first responders.

The event will feature:

  • Emergency vehicle and helicopter displays
  • A live Jaws of Life demonstration
  • Free hot dogs, drinks, and ice cream
  • Giveaways from community organizations

Montour Night Out is a wonderful way to show appreciation for the law enforcement, fire, and EMS personnel who serve our region. It also helps foster stronger connections between first responders and the communities they protect.

Admission is free, and all are welcome!

Rite Aid Customers Can Redeem Gift Cards Until June 6

As a result of a bankruptcy announcement, Rite Aid will accept gift cards, coupons and other Rite Aid rewards through June 6. Returns and exchanges will not be accepted after June 4.

Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday encourages any consumers who experience issues redeeming their Rite Aid points, coupons or unused gift cards or with returning merchandise to Rite Aid to submit an online complaint to the Bureau of Consumer Protection. They may also contact the Consumer Protection Hotline at 1-800-441-2555. Read more from the Attorney General.

Remembering the Fallen on Memorial Day

“Our flag does not fly because the wind moves it. It flies with the last breath of each soldier who died protecting it.” – Unknown

To all the men and women who selflessly gave their lives so we can enjoy the freedoms we hold dear, thank you. To the families who are missing a loved one from their lives, please know that loss was not in vain. We remember, and we appreciate the sacrifice.
